Flagship Program: Digital Storytelling and STEM Workshops Sponsored by Starbucks

In April 2019, we began our partnership with Starbucks to deliver STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) learning.  We held workshops, hands-on sessions and took 30 kids to the Apple store for workshops with the Apple staff.

A great first series of events. Read below to find out more.

MC1 Danian Douglas, a 2017 Navy Videographer of the Year, designed and taught the majority of workshops on videography and storytelling. As a Media Officer with the Navy, he was able to bring equipment from Fort Meade to show students various styles of camera and lighting. We love when parents join their kids! Pictured here a parent volunteered to be a subject for one of Danian’s session on good and bad lighting when filming. She not only was a volunteer but picked up some tips with her son.

One of our centerpiece sessions of the week was an Interactive Media play called Refugee. Performed by the students of our partners at Chance Academy, along with students from the Living Water School, the play was about the life, hopes and dreams of refugees from five countries. A truly interactive experience, the play used visuals, audio, music and videos to convey the emotions in the story.
